> L'unique album éponyme a fêté ses 30 ans en cette année 2024. Il est désormais disponible sur toutes les plateformes numériques ainso que maxi 4 titres PECHEUR agrémenté de bonus. Un nouvel album contenant des démos que le groupe a travaillé par la suite quand des majors s'interressaient à eux est en préparation.

Formés en 1989 à Saclay, petite ville de la région ouest parisienne, le premier objectif du quatuor Dodge Veg-O-Matic (d’après la chanson de Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers) fut de reprendre sur scène des titres du groupe 60’s culte de Boston, The Remains. Mais c’est en 1992 qu’ils se lancent dans l’autoproduction d’un album avec des compositions personnelles. Leur leader Thierry Los crée un label, Trois Jeunes Tambours, qui existe à présent en tant que SARL sous le nom de 3JT Productions. Ils sont vite repérés par Caroline Molko chez Phonogram mais elle ne donne pas suite à une signature pensant qu’être sur une major nuirait à l’image et au démarrage du groupe… C’était comme ça à l’époque… C’est donc Media 7, le plus gros distributeur indépendant du moment, qui les signe en 1994 et l’aventure professionnelle commence. L’album éponyme est très bien accueilli par la presse et les radios (Sur France Inter, ils jouent live chez Laurent Ruquier et au Pont des Artistes d’Isabelle Dhordain ; Jean-Louis Foulquier les diffuse dans son émission par l'intermédiaire de Didier Varrot, alors tout jeune journaliste, mais aussi sur Europe 1 dans l'émission live et en direct de Marc Toesca (le même soir qu'Edwin Collins !...). Les voilà donc sur les routes françaises mais peu avant, Alain Rouffineau l’harmoniciste officiant de manière étincelante sur l’album, jette l’éponge. Ce nouveau trio désormais se compose des frères Los, Eric (batterie, chœurs), Thierry (guitare, chant) et Muriel Illouz (basse, chœurs). « Pêcheur », le single extrait de l’album, est l’exemple de cette volonté d’affirmer leur racine culturelle tout en gardant l’esprit de leurs influences (le Garage Rock, The Feelies, Violent Femmes, Woodentops, New Model Army...). Des guitares acoustiques et électriques toniques, une basse mélodique, une batterie énergiquement subtile et le chant en français, sont les quelques signes qui caractérisent le son des Dodge Veg-O-Matic… On les qualifie alors chez le mensuel ROCK SOUND de "folk rock urbain" alors que sur scène, les chansons deviennent plus brutes et électriques. On les verra aussi bien en première partie de No One Is Innocent que de Jonathan Richman, leur idole absolue, au New Morning, puis, découverts aux Bar en Trans de Rennes par le tout jeune Jean-Paul Roland (dorénavant boss) aux Eurockéennes de Belfort en 1995, juste après Supergrass... Après plusieurs contacts avec des majors dont BMG (Bertrand Lamblot leur finance des maquettes qu’on retrouve en tête de l’album de 1995 « Rien ne devrait être à vendre ») et Eastwest (Mika Salla se prend malheureusement un refus par la hiérarchie pour les signer car un groupe dans le genre occupe déjà la place), une signature avec Barclay tourne finalement court quand Marc Thonon, le DA en place, se fait éconduire (il signera 3 ans après sur son propre label ATMO Louise Attaque dans un style approchant, quoique entièrement acoustique pour leur part). Quand ça veut pas ça veut pas. Eric quitte le groupe pour se consacrer à plein temps à la composition de musiques pour les jeux-vidéos dans lequel il fera carrière. Entre 1996 et 1998, Muriel et Thierry accompagneront sur scène Hervé Zerrouk, l’ex chanteur des Désaxés dont Thierry a produit entre temps les deux albums solo, avant de former une nouvelle formation en 1998, VEGOMATIC, dans un style que le groupe défriche alors l’Electrosurf, avec le batteur Gérard Gacoin et le pianiste Jean-Michel Haye que Thierry avait engagé pour accompagner Zerrouk…

Born in 1989 in Saclay, a small town in the western Paris region, the first objective of the quartet Dodge Veg-O-Matic (song’s name by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers) was to cover songs from the cult 60's US band from Boston, The Remains. But it was in 1992 that they began self-producing an album with personal compositions. Their leader Thierry Los created a label, Trois Jeunes Tambours, which now exists under the name 3JT Productions. They were quickly spotted by Caroline Molko at Phonogram but she did not follow through with a signing thinking that being on a major would harm the image and the start of the group... That was how it was at the time... So it was Media 7, the largest independent distributor of the moment, that signed them in 1994 and the professional adventure began. The eponymous album is very well received by the press and the radios (On France Inter, they play live at Laurent Ruquier and at Isabelle Dhordain's Pont des Artistes ; Jean-Louis Foulquier plays them on his show through Didier Varrot, then a very young journalist, but also on Europe 1 in Marc Toesca's live show (the same evening as Edwin Collins!... ). So here they are on the French roads but shortly before, Alain Rouffineau, the harmonica player officiating in a sparkling manner on the album, quite the band. This new trio now consists of the Los brothers, Eric (drums, backing vocal), Thierry (guitar, lead vocal) and Muriel Illouz (bass, backing vocal). “Pêcheur”, the single taken from the album, is an example of this desire to affirm their cultural French roots while keeping the spirit of their influences (Garage Rock, The Feelies, Violent Femmes, Woodentops, New Model Army. ..). Vibrant acoustic and electric guitars, melodic bass, energetically subtle drums and French singing are the few signs that characterize the sound of Dodge Veg-O-Matic... They are then described in the monthly ROCK SOUND of "urban folk rock" while on stage, the songs become more raw and electric. We will see them as the opening act for No One Is Innocent as well as for Jonathan Richman, their absolute idol, at New Morning,Paris ; then discovered at the Bar en Trans in Rennes by the very young Jean-Paul Roland (now boss) at the Eurockéennes in Belfort in 1995, just after Supergrass. After several contacts with majors including BMG (Bertrand Lamblot produce 4 demos which we can find in the 1995 album) and Eastwest (Mika Salla was unfortunately refused by the hierarchy to sign them because a group in the genre already occupies the place), a signing with Barclay/Universal finally comes to an end when Marc Thonon, the AD in place, is dismissed (he will sign 3 years later on his own label ATMO Louise Attaque in a similar style, although entirely acoustic for their part). That’s life… Eric leaves the band to devote himself full time to composing music for video games in which he will make a career. Between 1996 and 1998, Muriel and Thierry accompanied Hervé Zerrouk on stage, the former singer of Les Désaxés, whose two solo albums Thierry produced, before forming a new formation in 1998, VEGOMATIC, in a style that Thierry Los then pioneered, electrosurf, with the drummer and the pianist that Thierry had hired to accompany Zerrouk…
