The Cool Feedback Quartet’s music is quite similar to a philharmonic orchestra manipulating new material: feedback, or in other words the unexpected beauty of sound when it is let loose. Becoming its master so as to make the best use of it, like a new instrument, the guitar pick up plays again on request. Harmonising sounds like a string section gone wild would, like light piercing through ether, tearing up the background and taking us for good to unknown territory.
The band leader, Grégoire Garrigues, who first got the idea of the concept and got the ball to roll, is a well known and respected guitarist in Parisian rock circles who has recorded more than 13 different personal albums under different names, as well as several others as a session man (Lili Boniche, APC, Claudia Colonna, F.Robert Lloyd, Hubert#06,
2:12AM, The Bratchman, Long Chris and Vic Laurens). He has been seen on stage accompanying international rock legends such as Vince Taylor, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Tav Falco’s Panther Burns, Jonathan Richman, Kim Fowley or Chris Wilson from the Flamin’ Groovies.
He joined forces with guitarist F.Robert Lloyd, author of "Think About Brooklyn", a free jazz album with a post rock approach issued in 1993 on Section Musicale of the very elegant ready to wear APC clothes brand.
A little history
The Larsen effect is a retroactive acoustic phenomenon discovered by the Danish physician Soren Absalon Larsen.
It is often referred to by the English term feedback.
Be it Jimi Hendrix or Neil young who both made great use of it several times, feedback has always fascinated electric guitarists. This effect takes place when both transmitter and receptor of an audio system are near each other. The sound received by the receptor is feedback and reproduced amplified to the transmitter.
This loop produces a wave which grows in intensity to the extent where it can reach the limits of the equipment used, and it can damage and even destroy it. It was used moderately as early as in the fifties by chuck Berry. In the sixties, electric guitarists (Jimi Hendrix in particular) tried to exploit this phenomenon, previously seen as a nuisance, to extend their choice of colours.
To achieve this they purposefully get their guitar pick ups close to their amplifiers to extract screaming sounds they then try to modulate. In the nineties bands such as Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine will carry on with this ever so exciting experimentation.

Grégoire Garrigues
As early as 1979 Patrick Eudeline he plays with, offers him to accompany the legendary Vince Taylor, a few weeks later he is back on stage with Jonathan Richman of the Modern Lovers. In 1985 Claudia Colonna asks him to join Les Guépards as drummer before becoming guitarist, this adventure will last six years.
In 1993 a long collaboration with the Section Musicale label begins (from the ready to wear clothes brand APC created by Jean Touitou), with the recording of the Welsh/French F.Robert Lloyd. 20 years recording will ensue with:
Bryan Adams, Lili Boniche (3 albums), Julian Schnabel, Wendy James, Mami Chan, Roman Coppola, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Zoe Cassavetes, Sofia Coppola, Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock, Ino Idefumi, Jarvis Cocker and Chris Wilson.
Simultaneously he leads his own band Grégoire 4 with three albums from 1998 to 2012. He sets up les Dragueurs with an American friend in 2000, one album and two 45's plus an USA tour.
In 2001 Tav Falco requests him to join The Panther Burns and since then they have been touring the world and have recorded 2 albums.
In 2012 his own band undergoes a name change to become Super Wagner. Chris Wilson, taking a break from The Flamin’ Groovies, asks to be accompanied by him, a live album issued in 2012 follows, Then in 2013 "Incandescence " comes out. He is also a member of Les Socquettes Blanches since 2002 whose 5th album is issued in November 2015. The same year (2012) he is contacted to back the legendary Kim Fowley. He is also a member of the Bobbie Clarke’s Noise (Vince Taylor, Johnny Hallyday and Jeff Beck's drummer), produces Hubert#06's first album (2008), produces an album for 2:12AM (2012), records with Vic Laurens and Long Chris in 2013.
F.Robert Lloyd
F.Robert Lloyd has been around (or should we say strolling) for many years, according to whatever suits his fancy, with his guitars, a mandolin, and various instruments (in a basic rock’n'roll universe, free or repetitive hypnotic world) He loves the Smurfs, Bo Diddley, Albert Ayler, Wilko Johnson. He loves these people because they know how to behave. He loves Nolwenn Leroy for the same reasons (although he is more enamoured with the shamanic side of Celtic music). He can’t understand why people still sing after Shane McGowan. He gets on splendidly with Grégoire Garrigues, Gilbert Atman and Jac Berrocal, probably a question of balance.

Iann Assuied
A true stage and session man, Iann Assuied has played with Gnawa Diffusion in 1992, APC (Lili Boniche, Wendy James), studio and live in France and in Japan 1996-1998, Booster 1998-2000, Sébastien Tellier 2001, Grégoire 4 in 2004. Live and studio sessions with many others since then, 2:12AM, Dantes, Enrico Macias. His work as DJ, at Palais de Tokyo for instance, is sought after.

Michel Guikovaty
At eight years old he starts to study the piano with Mrs Landowsky, then in the C.N.S.M. in Paris. He carries on with the study of musical theory, harmony and counterpoint between the age of fifteen and nineteen. After he is awarded, at l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, a Diplôme Supérieur d’exécution de Piano (Jean Micault's class), a Diplôme de composition (Tony Audin), as well as music history and jazz. He then works privately with Pierre Sancan and Aldo Ciccolini. He also takes part in several summer universities, for instance in Lausanne with Jean-Bernard Pommier, in Salzburg with Tatiana Nicolaïeva and in Nice with Jacques Rouvier.
After being awarded Diplôme d’état de Professeur de Piano in 1987, he is nominated Lauréat de la Fondation Yehudi Menuhin in 1990 after an audition. Since then he has been performing in several festivals as well as on tour in Japan. His repertoire extends from Bach to the twentieth century with a preference for German romanticism.

Le groupe The Cool Feedback Quartet se rapproche d’un orchestre philarmonique qui travaillerait une nouvelle matière : le feedback, ou la beauté inattendue de la mise en abyme du son. Le maitriser afin de mieux s’en servir, pareil à un nouvel instrument, le micro de la guitare rejouant à la demande ce qu’il diffuse. Harmoniser les sons comme une section de cordes en furie qui, telle la lumière perçant l’éther, déchirerait l’air et nous emmènerait définitivement ailleurs.
Le leader du groupe et initiateur du concept, Grégoire Garrigues, est un guitariste réputé dans le milieu rock parisien qui totalise à son actif 13 albums personnels sous différents noms, ainsi que de nombreux autres en tant que musicien de séance (Lili Boniche, APC, Claudia Colonna, F.Robert Lloyd, Hubert#06, 2 :12AM, The Bratchman, Long Chris et Vic Laurens). On l’a vu sur scène accompagner des légendes du rock international comme Vince Taylor, Jarvis Cocker de Pulp, Tav Falco, Jonathan Richman, Kim Fowley ou Chris Wilson des Flamin’ Groovies.
Il s’est adjoint l’aide du guitariste F.Robert Lloyd, auteur de l’album « Think About Brooklyn », un album free jazz avec une approche déjà post rock sorti en 1993 sur le label Section Musicale de la très chic marque de prêt-à-porter APC.
Un peu d’histoire
L'effet Larsen est un phénomène physique de rétroaction acoustique découvert par le physicien danois Søren Absalon Larsen. Il est souvent désigné sous le terme anglais de feedback.
Que ce soit Jimi Hendrix ou Neil Young, qui l’ont beaucoup utilisé, le feedback a toujours fasciné les guitaristes électriques. Cet effet se produit lorsque l'émetteur amplifié (exemple : haut-parleur) et le récepteur (exemple : microphone) d'un système audio sont placés à proximité l'un de l'autre. Le son émis par l'émetteur est capté par le récepteur qui le retransmet amplifié à l'émetteur. Cette boucle produit un signal auto ondulatoire qui augmente progressivement en intensité jusqu'à atteindre les limites du matériel utilisé, avec le risque de l'endommager ou même de le détruire.
On en trouve à petites doses dès les années 50 chez Chuck Berry. Dans les années 1960, des guitaristes électriques de rock and roll (en particulier Jimi Hendrix) cherchèrent à exploiter ce phénomène, auparavant considéré comme nuisible, pour élargir la palette de leurs effets. Ils rapprochent alors volontairement les micros de leur guitare de l'ampli afin de lui arracher des sons stridents qu'ils tentent de moduler. Dans les 90’s des groupes comme Sonic Youth ou My Bloody Valentine pousseront encore l’expérience, toujours aussi exaltante.

Dès 1979 Patrick Eudeline, avec qui il joue, lui propose d’accompagner le mythique Vince Taylor, quelques semaines plus tard il se retrouve sur scène avec Jonathan Richman des Modern Lovers. En 1985 Claudia Colonna lui demande d’intégrer ses Guépards en tant que batteur puis guitariste, aventure qui durera 6ans.
En 1993 commence une longue collaboration avec le label Section Musicale (de la marque de prêt à porter APC crée par Jean Touitou) avec l’enregistrement de l’album du franco-gallois F.Robert Lloyd. S’en suivront 20 ans d’enregistrements avec Bryan Adams, Lili Boniche (3 albums), Julian Schnabel, Wendy James, Mami Chan, Roman Coppola, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Zoe Cassavetes, Sofia Coppola, Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock, Ino Idefumi, Jarvis Cocker et Chris Wilson.
Parallèlement il emmène son propre groupe, Grégoire 4, pour 3 albums de1998 à 2012. Il monte Les Dragueurs avec un ami américain en 2000, 1 album et 2 45t + tournée aux USA.
En 2001 Tav Falco fait appel à lui pour intégrer The Panther Burns avec qui il tourne depuis lors à travers le monde et avec qui il enregistre 2 albums.
En 2012 son propre groupe change de nom pour devenir Super Wagner et il est appelé par Chris Wilson, en rupture de Flamin’ Groovies, pour l’accompagner, en résultera un album live sorti en 2012 puis l’année 2013 voit la sortie de « Incandescence ».
Il fait aussi parti des Socquettes Blanches depuis 2002 avec qui il s’apprête à enregistrer un 5ème album en 2015.
La même année il est contacté pour accompagner en live le légendaire Kim Fowley.
Il fait aussi partie du New Bobbie Clarke Noise (batteur de Vince Taylor et Johnny Hallyday), produit le premier album d’Hubert#06 (2008) produit un album pour 2:12AM (2012) enregistre avec Vic Laurens et Long Chris 2013.
F.Robert Lloyd
F.Robert Lloyd se promène (ou plutôt flâne) depuis de nombreuses années, au grés de ce qui peut l'inspirer, avec ses guitares, une mandoline et divers objets sonores (dans un univers de rock basique, free, ou hypnotique répétitif. Il adore les Schtroumpfs, Bo Diddley, Albert Ayler, Wilko Johnson. Il adore ces gens, parce qu’ils savent se tenir. Il aime Nolwenn Leroy pour les même raisons (mais pas vraiment pour sa musique). Il pense que chanter après Shane McGowan des Pogues, ça ne sert à rien. Il s'entend très bien avec Grégoire Garrigues, Gilbert Artman, et Jac Berrocal, histoire d'équilibre sans doute.

Musicien de scène et de studio confirmé, Iann Assuied a joué avec Gnawa Diffusion en 1992, APC (Lili Boniche, Wendy James), studio et live en France et au Japon 1996-1998, Booster 1998-2000, Sébastien Tellier 2001, Grégoire 4 en 2004. Du studio et de la scène pour moult gens depuis lors, 2:12AM, Dantes, Enrico Macias. Il est également un DJ recherché, résident au Palais de Tokyo notamment.

Il commence l’étude du piano à l’âge de huit ans avec Madame Landowsky, puis au C.N.S.M. de Paris. Il poursuit des études de solfège, d’harmonie et de contrepoint entre 15 et 19 ans.
Par la suite il obtient, à l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, un Diplôme Supérieur d’exécution de Piano (classe de Jean Micault), de composition (classe de Tony Audin) ainsi que d’histoire de la musique et de Jazz. Il travail ensuite à titre privé avec Pierre Sancan et Aldo Ciccolini. Il suit également diverses académies d’été, notamment à Lausanne avec Jean-Bernard Pommier, à Salzbourg avec Tatiana Nicolaïeva et à Nice avec Jacques Rouvier.
Après avoir obtenu le diplôme d’état de Professeur de Piano en 1987, il est nommé Lauréat de la Fondation Yehudi Menuhin en 1990 sur audition. Depuis, il se produit dans divers festivals ainsi qu’en tournée au Japon (1997). Son répertoire s’étend de Bach au XXème siècle avec une prédilection pour le Romantisme Allemand.
